STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS ABOUT TEACHERS' TEACHING STYLES IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM

This study investigated students' perceptions of teachers' teaching styles in language classes at a vocational high school in Indonesia. The purpose of this research was to explore how students perceive and respond to different teaching styles used by English teachers. This study used a qualitative research method with a case study design. The research data were collected through semi-structured interview and observation Participants in this study consisted of 10th,11th and12th grade vocational students, consisting of 3 female students and 3 male students. The data were analyzed using a three-step analysis process by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014).
The research data were grouped and analyzed based on aspects of students' perceptions of teachers' teaching styles, including non-visual senses and multimodality. Teachers' teaching styles are perceived by students in a variety of
ways, including delegator, demonstrator, formal authority, classical expert, and facilitator. The results showed that most students felt and experienced that they understood the material with demonstrator and facilitator teaching styles because these teaching styles increased students' engagement and understanding of the taught material. The dominant students’ perception of the teachers’ teaching style was multimodal because it refers to the demonstrator and facilitator teaching styles.
In this perception, students had the ability to understand and combine information from different senses such as vision, hearing, and movement. Therefore, some students argued that learning through group discussion and question-answer methods made students understand the material better. However, some students said that the monotonous teaching style was not effective and wanted teachers to use more varied teaching methods. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that English teachers can use more varied teaching styles by combining teaching techniques, teaching methods, and teaching materials that are interesting and in line with the needs of students.
