Abstract

This research analyzed the types of language styles used by the main character in an English-language movie and their potential to support speaking skill development. Focusing on the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. This study aimed to determine the types of language styles employed and the way the main character utilizes these styles. Using Keraf's (2010) theory, language styles were categorized into formal, informal, and conversational types. The research employed qualitative methods with data collected through observation and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using discourse analysis as outlined by Wooffitt (2005), emphasizing the interpretation of language in its context. The findings revealed 13 instances of formal style, 70 of informal style, and 12 of conversational style, with informal style being the most dominant. These results highlighted the importance of understanding language style variations in different contexts. The findings suggested that movies can be effective tools for teaching speaking skills by exposing students to diverse language styles and contexts. Teachers can integrate movies into lessons to enhance students' adaptability in using formal and informal language effectively.
